Always Look on The Bright Side of Life

The original post I had scheduled today was actually some photos and a recap of a trip I took to Boston a little while ago. While I still plan to post this, because Boston is and continues to be a beautiful city, I felt that today everyone could just a little cheering up.

While searching the internet yesterday for something that were not completely soul wrenching, I came across this photo from Humans of New York. HONY is a photo project run by a NYC photographer named Brandon and if you are one of the few people who doesn’t already follow his blog, you should change that immediately.

I think if we all show each other just a fraction of the love these two dogs have for each other, everything will work out. Let’s just be nice to each other, and we will make it out OK.

Bar on the Go! (And an Over the Weekend Update)

How awesome is this bike bar? It would be perfect for summer picnics in the park. Just pack up the bike and ride out, no need to strap on a backpack. Ashley of the fantastic blog Hither and Thither  stumbled upon this, and I think it would be a great little DIY (once I actually own a bike, but details details)

As you probably noticed, my blogging as been a little lax the last week. My sister came to town on a whirlwind three day visit, so I focused my free time on hanging out with her. It was a lot of fun, we got to check out Catfish, which is a great little Cajun restaurant that just opened up in my neighborhood. I also finally got to try Choku, which is amazing ramen place in Prospect Heights. I tried the pork bun, and now I want to eat it everyday for the rest of my life. All and all Id say it was a good trip, capped off with a delicious group brunch at my apartment before she left. I’m hoping the trip has convinced her to move out east.

(posting will be a little light this week as well. My best friends are getting married, and I am officiating so Ive got some wedding business to attend to)

Feeling Shady

shady1/2/3

There appears to be a theme developing in my last few posts, spring spring spring. I think I am extra excited because the land of my birth (Minnesota) is currently still in the 30’s and snowy, so sucks to be them.

I’m heading out to a destination wedding in Cancun for the 4th of July, and I am currently in the market for some new shades. I am currently leaning towards that peach number in the middle, but would love some opinions.

Spring has Sprung! Let’s Drink

We are topping out in the high 70s today, the sun is shining, the trees are starting to bloom and the birds are chirping. After what felt like the longest winter in the history of since I’ve been alive, spring finally decided to get out of a bed and come to the party.

Now that its here, all I can think about are bike rides in the park, drinks on the patio, and the sun still being out when I leave work at night.

Despite living in the middle of no-where Brooklyn (which is just between recently “hipsterfied” Brooklyn, and “there-is-no-way-in-hell-I’m-going-there” Brooklyn) I’ve got a pretty great view of the Manhattan skyline from my roof. I can not wait to hang out up there with some summer drinks in hand, and with my sister coming to town this weekend there is no time like the present.

I came across this delicious looking lemonade while looking around on Elisa and Emma’s fantastic blog. I think it sounds perfect for a Saturday afternoon and I can’t wait to try it out! Emma’s suggests adding a splash of bourbon to it, which I think sounds great.

Do you guys have any recommendations on spring drinks and cocktails? I’d love to get some ideas.

The Balcony Is Closed

Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel

“Every great film should seem new every time you see it.”

I was really saddened to hear about the death of Roger Ebert yesterday. Not only was he a brilliant writer, but he was a fantastic person. He wrote and spoke about film in a way that made it accessible for everyone, and helped me foster a deep love for film. Whether he was reviewing an arthouse film, a blockbuster or a b horror movie he wrote honestly and  humorously. He never held back on what he thought, be it a movie review, a political cause, or just responding to someone’s comments on Twitter, he always spoke his mind and did so in a fashion that was a joy to read. My favorite reviews were often of movies he hated, these are a few of my favorites:

Valentines Day: “Valentine’s Day is being marketed as a Date Movie. I think it’s more of a First-Date Movie. If your date likes it, do not date that person again. And if you like it, there may not be a second date.” [February 2010]

Pirates of the Caribbean 4:”At least no movie has yet been inspired by ‘It’s a Small World.'” [May 2011]

Human Centipede: “I am required to award stars to movies I review. This time, I refuse to do it. The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? It is what it is and occupies a world where the stars don’t shine.” [May 2010]

Although when he loved a film, that was pretty great too:

Almost Famous: “Oh, what a lovely film. I was almost hugging myself while I watched it.” [September 2000]

You can read some of his best quotes here.

It is also worth taking the time to peruse his twitter account. The 140 character medium really suited him.

Insta-update

I am really bad about bringing my DSLR with me on a day to day basis. I also have this chronic fear that the one time I bring it with it will get smashed by some kid on the subway doing flips on the bars or something. Since my phone is always with me, I use it for most day to day photos. So here is a quick update of my life, complete with kelvin filter. You can find me on instagram @erini

(PS, if you live in NYC and have not yet been to Sweet Revenge, drop what you are doing and go right now. Seriously, it is amazing. But I guess its hard to screw up cupcakes and booze)
